Niko Kovač states Borussia Dortmund deserved to lose to Bodø/Glimt

Borussia Dortmund came out empty-handed on the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League. The Black and Yellows lost 1-0 to Bodø/Glimt in Norway, and head coach Niko Kovač, who recently extended his contract until 2029, said in his post-match reaction that the team deserved to lose.

Speaking to DAZN, Kovač said: “We weren’t even in the game until we conceded the goal. In the first half, we lacked passion and intensity. We didn’t play the kind of football that is needed to win here.”

Kovač made five changes from the 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen. Fabio Silva, Samuele Inacio, and Konstantinos Karetsas started, with Nico Schlotterbeck rested for load management – meaning a return for Ramy Bensebaini, while Joey Veerman started ahead of Felix Nmecha.

Going behind to Fredrik Sjøvold’s second-half strike, Dortmund failed to control the game and didn’t create enough clear-cut chances. With an xG of 0.79, Dortmund created only one clear-cut chance, as a result of a quadruple substitution on the hour mark.

“It wasn’t until the four substitutions that we found our way into the game better and took control. Up to that point, though, the opposition was clearly the better side,” explained the BVB coach.

After the loss, BVB sit in 18th place in the Champions League standings with three points. The Black and Yellows will face Union Berlin away on Saturday afternoon, hoping to get back to winning ways.
