Tyson Bagent is expected to start for the Bears on Sunday vs. Jets

The Bears are deferring to their depth chart.

Despite Monday night’s win by third-string quarterback Case Keenum over the Eagles, the Bears will apparently turn to second-stringer Tyson Bagent on Sunday against the Jets.

Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Bagent is expected to start the game.

Although the Bears have tried to keep the identity of the starter a secret, the signs have pointed to Bagent. He took the first-team reps during practice on Wednesday and Thursday โ€” and possibly Friday.

Coach Ben Johnson hasn’t announced a starter for the Week 4 game. Does he need to? Bagent is listed as the backup to starter Caleb Williams. Bagent didn’t play on Monday night, given that he was able to practice all week while in the concussion protocol.

Keenum got the Week 3 start against the Eagles. With Bagent cleared, the Bears have decided not to ignore the preordained configuration of quarterbacks, even though Keenum managed to engineer a 27-7 win over the Eagles.

Undrafted out of Shepherd, Bagent started four games in 2023, his rookie year. He has made eight appearances since then. Most recently, he replaced Williams in the fourth quarter of the Week 2 loss to the Vikings. Bagent nearly pulled off the victory.
