Werder Bremen hope to retain Niclas Füllkrug, but another pay cut may be necessary

SV Werder Bremen are reportedly eager to secure Niclas Füllkrug’s services beyond the current Bundesliga campaign. The 33-year-old German international has enjoyed an impressive return to the Weser, but negotiations over a permanent transfer from West Ham United could prove complicated.

According to Sky Germany, Werder would like to retain Füllkrug after his season-long loan expires in summer 2027. Sport Bild also reports that Bremen’s management are determined to explore a permanent deal, while DeichStube suggests that both the player and the club are generally receptive to extending their cooperation.

No concrete negotiations have yet taken place, however. Werder do not possess a purchase option in the loan agreement, and Füllkrug remains under contract with West Ham until 2028.

Niclas Füllkrug’s future depends on West Ham and financial considerations

The striker’s salary represents one of the principal obstacles to a permanent agreement. Sky reports that Füllkrug’s annual earnings at West Ham depend on the club’s divisional status. The German would reportedly receive approximately €2 million net per year in the Championship, potentially doubling to €4 million net should the Londoners return to the Premier League.

Füllkrug already accepted financial concessions to facilitate his return to Bremen. Whether another agreement can be reached will depend on the player’s expectations, West Ham’s plans, and the conditions under which the English club would sanction a permanent departure.

For now, Werder can at least take encouragement from their returning striker’s performances.

Niclas Füllkrug provides Werder with more than goals

Füllkrug scored his fourth consecutive Bundesliga goal during Friday evening’s dramatic 2-2 draw away at Borussia Dortmund, completing Werder’s comeback from a two-goal deficit with a stoppage-time equaliser. The striker has now scored five goals across all competitions this season and has established himself as an influential figure in Daniel Thioune’s dressing room.

His impact extends beyond his goalscoring. Werder goalkeeper Karl Hein recently described Füllkrug as a “monster” because of his contributions both on and off the pitch, while midfielder Ludovit Reis praised the veteran’s commitment and leadership. Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has also highlighted the striker’s exemplary professionalism, dedication to training, and determination to help younger teammates.

Whether Füllkrug’s return can become a permanent arrangement remains uncertain.
